Epiphany

For my Daughter

  1. Epiphany the manifestation of Christ to the Gentiles as represented by the Magi. (Matthew 2:1–12) *the festival commemorating the Epiphany on 6 January.

  2. A moment of sudden and great revelation or realization. [Oxford English Dictionary definition]

The following is mine…

You came into this world on a snowy day,
the coldest of the century in Virginia.
An emergency birth kept me from seeing you.
I swam up from anesthesia, panicked
because I could not hold you in my arms.
A long sterile hallway separated us,
a nurse told me you were okay.
Still, I had to see you. But it was “against hospital policy.”
Into a wheelchair, with a catheter bag dangling above,
rolling along the linoleum floor.
It was not elegant.
Sheer will took me all the way to the nursery window.
Then I saw you: tiny angelic baby. Mine.
My heart stopped at the sight, my eyes flooded.
Pure joy. Profound love… I would die for you.
I knew that.
I was twenty-one years old. My life changed forever that day.
You were my one and only epiphany
born on Epiphany.
My first-born dear daughter.
